Warm Air Heater Replacement

The Brief

We were carrying out a routine service on a floor-standing gas-fired warm air heater at Scottish Opera's production studios in Glasgow when we found that the primary heat exchanger had cracked. This was allowing products of combustion to leak into the heated air supplied to the occupied workspace, so under gas safety procedure the appliance was classified as Immediately Dangerous and could not be left in use. As the heater served the production paint shop, maintaining a suitable working temperature was essential to keep painting operations running.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Fault diagnosis: During the service we identified the cracked primary heat exchanger and classified the appliance as Immediately Dangerous in line with gas safety procedure.
• Made the installation safe: We isolated the gas supply and made the installation safe so the appliance could not be used until it was replaced.
• Detailed quotation: We provided the client with a clear quotation for the replacement works.
• Warm air heater replacement: We installed a new Powrmatic CX 175 kW gas-fired cabinet heater, sized for the space.
• Commissioning and handover: We tested and commissioned the new heater and carried out combustion analysis and operational safety checks, restoring safe, compliant heating.

The Result

By catching the cracked heat exchanger during routine servicing, a potentially serious safety issue was resolved before it could put building occupants at risk. The rapid replacement meant the production paint shop kept operating at the temperatures needed for painting, minimising disruption. Scottish Opera was left with a new Powrmatic cabinet heater running safely and reliably, and the job is a clear example of why regular planned servicing matters.
